Keratoconus
What Is Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition in which weakened collagen fibers within the cornea cause it to thin and protrude, resulting in blurry vision and partial blindness. There is no known cause for Keratoconus. It has been linked to certain genetic characteristics and a history of eye rubbing, but a definitive reason remains unknown. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition, the age of the patient and how quickly it’s progressing.
At Envision Eye Institute, our ophthalmologists can assist patients with effective treatment options that may help correct or even halt the development of the disease.
Keratoconus
Although Keratoconus can develop at any age, it often begins to develop in the teen years to the early 20s. Changes in the shape of the cornea occur over several years and happen gradually. In most cases, both eyes eventually become affected.
Keratoconus can be difficult to detect due to its slow progression rate. Signs of keratoconus may include, distorted and blurred vision, myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism and double vision.
